GILLES BÉDARD

Gilles Bédard sees his art as a primal cry from the heart, the deep, spontaneous freeing of his emotions

Born in Quebec City, he joined the Canadian Coast Guard aboard icebreakers where he discovered the effects of the midnight sun and infinite possibilities of the light on the Arctic icepack. After 4 years at sea, he landed in Charlevoix where he would settle at the end of the 80’s.

His pastel portraits are quickly replaced by a liberated and shining representation of the Charlevoix landscape, the St. Lawrence River, the Saguenay fjord as well as Quebec CIty’s old town.

Enamoured of his land, he owned several workshops and galleries in Baie-Saint-Paul, Les Éboulements, Saint-Joseph-de-la-rive and Saint-Urbain-de-Charlevoix.

For more than 40 years, the natural and spontaneous aspects of his works are a part of many well-known art collections such as the Canadian Royal Mint, the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Flora-Canada, Pétro-Canada, the Charlevoix Casino, the Scotia Bank, SAQ and the Gouverneur Hotal Chains.

Maturity and luminosity are the hallmarks of his paintings; along with his daughter’s creations, the artists’ works can be found at Galerie GB, 29 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street, where tourists abound and the art scene is legendary.

GENEVIÈVE BÉDARD

Born in Quebec City, in the Charlesbourg sector, Geneviève Bédard grew up watching her father make his living as an artist. The awakening of her creativity was spurred on by his inspiring presence.

At the turn of the new millenium, she had perfected her drawing style when her itinerary brought her to Baie St-Paul, a region revered for its pictural art traditions. She paints with acrylics, a medium she will use over and over again.

Now settled in the Charlevoix back country, between the Rivière du Gouffre and the Grands-Jardins Mountains, she has found the necessary peace to transpose on canvas her interpretation of nature with immediate effect.

After taking part in several exhibitions, in a group of artists or by herself, she
opened her own gallery in 2021 where she works as a galerist alongside her father. For Gilles Bédard, this marks a return to his roots since he owned several galleries and artist workshops in Charlevoix; it is also a new business challenge for Geneviève,

The Galerie GB is located at 29 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street, where tourists abound and the art scene is legendary.
